What's Your Flava?

Hello weekend and my readers! I just checked my Facebook page and lots of friends have already posted heat-related updates using words like 'scorching and sizzling' to describe the day. They beat me to the punch as I would use the same on my wall. Keep in mind that wearing light color clothes are cooler than darker ones. Most important, drink plenty of water while out and about. If you can stand the heat, have some fun in the summertime. Remember to take lots of breaks to cool down and look for shaded spots. There are only a couple of days left in July and it's National Ice Cream Month. What's your favorite ice cream flava, pick it up at the grocery store ;-) Mine are strawberry, chocolate and butter pecan, Yum!

TGIF is Hot Stuff!

I hope the day is off to a nice start. It's almost noon and it's been a busy morning catching up on emails, news and reading blogs which I love to do. I admit that I was kind of in a funk at the beginning of the week, but got my groove back and have been productive. The day is simply gorgeous and there's a slight summer breeze coming through the windows, feels good. One of my friend's stopped by awhile ago. She was on her way to run errands, but wanted to drop off a few things. We both like to stir-fry so she had a couple cloves of garlic that will add some yummy goodness. My friend likes Tabasco hot sauce and puts it on everything. She brought me a bottle of cayenne pepper sauce that someone had given to her and thought I might give it a try. The name on the bottle reads Cowboy Cayenne and I'm already thinking it's going to be some hot stuff. I better make sure to have a tall glass of water nearby. Giddy Up!

Healthy Tidbit ->Tomatoes

Hello, I know we are all looking forward to a Wonderful Wednesday. I think the word on the street is that I love tomatoes. I don't mind this news getting out because it's true :-) I remember some time ago when the price of tomatoes were super high, but the prices have come down a bit. I know my dinner salads were screaming for more, but I had to dice them sparingly. My oh my have things changed. I haven't had to buy tomatoes from the store in weeks. Several of my friends have plenty from their gardens and more than enough to share. I have probably mentioned this before, but the garden-grown veggies are simply the best and taste so fresh. My kitchen windowsill has a constant pop of red from the line of ripening tomatoes. Their nutritional value includes vitamins C & A along with antioxidants like lycopene for cancer-fighting. So keep tomatoes in your kitchen and add them to everything.

Motivation Monday

How is everyone doing on this start to Monday? It's taking a little longer for the sunshine to come out, but hopefully the clouds will make way for them soon. I'm getting focused and have a few things going already on my to-do list. I haven't written about my long-term unemployment in my blog, but it's been tough and the job market even tougher. I am staying positive and have a wonderful support group from my family and friends. I follow many job leads that come my way because you never know when one of them may be the job that says "You're Hired." Those words would be music to my ears. It has been very hard to remain motivated week after week especially on Mondays when others are heading back to work, but I remain just that...Motivated!

Let me end this post on a lighter note ->I read today on the internet that it's National Hot Fudge Sundae Day, now that's Motivation. Have a great week!

Beautiful Hummingbirds

After jumping online to catch up with emails and other stuff, I glanced out the door leading out to the patio and saw a lone hummingbird flying around the flower planter which contains purple petunias. The bird hung around for awhile going from bloom to bloom and then flew away. I'm fascinated by the hummingbirds fluttering wings and speed. I was glad to be in the right spot to see their beauty. Happy Sunday!

Frugal Saturday Shopping

Welcome Weekend! I just made some tuna spaghetti and it's in the refrigerator getting the chill on for lunch later. In a few minutes, I plan to dash out and make stops at the local antique stores and consignment shop. I haven't visited neither one in awhile. There is a booth in one of the antique stores with 60% off, I think they are closing their booth soon. I've got my eye out for another sundress like the one in this photo and hope to snag a frugal buy at the consignment store. It's all about being cool in the sweltering heat and these dresses fit the bill.

Cool Time with Weekend Guests

Happy Friday! I hope the week has been productive for everybody and many of your to-do list items are done. It's always nice when out-of-town guests come for the weekend. We start to think about places to show them and activities to attend. It's a good idea to check your local community calendar for events especially any freebies. You might just stumble upon an outdoor festival or concert. It's so hot and keeping yourself and guests cool will be a priority. Here are some cool summer favorites to have on hand during their visit:

--->Watermelon: cut up chunks in a large bowl so your guests can easily grab them and put some in a small bowl.
--->Pasta Salad: use any shape of pasta and add tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, and more of your veggie favorites. Season to taste and chill in the refrigerator.
--->Grilling: the grill will get plenty of use this weekend with guests in the house. Plan to have enough charcoal or gas ready to grill meats, fish, corn on the cob, etc. Try grilling peaches which I discovered are quite yummy.
--->Water: keep plenty of bottled waters chilled in the frig so your guests can grab one when heading out for an activity or just feeling thirsty. A pitcher of water is also good.
--->Sweet Stuff: no visit is complete without a pound cake or something sweet on the kitchen counter or table. Plan to buy one from the grocery store and don't forget the ice cream for a cool topping.

I think the backyard will get lots of use when weekend guests are visiting. Have lots of fun and stay cool with a glass of lemonade close by.

Quick Organizing Tip

If you have a college-bound teen heading off to college in the fall, it's not too early to start collecting any large, medium or small boxes to use when it's time to start packing their items. Just find a spot in the garage or their room to store the boxes for now. Also, have a sharpie pen ready to label the boxes of the contents inside each box. This will make unpacking easier and give them more time to study. Yep, studying!

New Week, Brown Bag Ideas

Hello Monday and New Week! I hope the morning commute to work was pleasant and all the drivers were happily singing to music in traffic...one can wish, right. I started thinking about the weekly brown bag lunches that I'm always encouraging people to make for lunch at work. As you know, I like the idea of carrying your lunch to work to save money and to eat some of the leftovers so they don't go to waste. I must admit that it probably gets old trying to come up with different things to take each day. If you have gotten into a routine, change things up a bit ->use turkey pastrami instead of just turkey, romaine or green leaf lettuce instead of iceberg on sandwiches, rye bread instead of wheat all the time. Even the condiments could use a makeover by spreading spicy brown mustard on the bread, Yum! Surprise yourself for lunch and enjoy every bite!

Don't Forget Your Sunglasses

Hi everybody, hope there is lots of sunshine outside your window today. It's a beauty in Atlanta with a lovely breeze to go along with it. I have all the windows open in the house and it feels really good. This has been the best few days from the brutal heat, but I hear it's returning tomorrow. For now, it's all about the coolness of the day. Before I forget, a good friend stopped by yesterday with a bunch of tomatoes from the garden. I have a whole row of them on my kitchen window seal ripening up just a bit more. I can't wait to slice them over my salads and sandwiches. Don't forget to grab your sunglasses as you head out to spend time with family and friends. Enjoy the bursts of sunshine in all you do!

TGIF is Peachy Keen

Hello everyone and hope your Friday is off to a great start. It's so nice to welcome cooler temps in Atlanta today. The heatwave earlier this week was brutal. I would normally be pretty bummed out with a sky full of clouds on Friday, but not so this time around. I welcome it! I bought some fresh peaches at the store yesterday and just sliced one up to go with my coffee and toast. Just the perfect light brunch to give me a jolt of energy to finish this blog post and other stuff :=) The food prices are still high on everything. Although I did snag a good price on cucumbers at $.48 cents each, I bought two. We are all finding ways to stretch our dollars and pinch pennies. Keep those coupons with you for extra savings when you spot a deal. Well, time to eat more of that yummy peach. My energy is up and I feel peachy keen!

Ways to Beat the Heat

I'm thinking nothing but cool thoughts and finding ways to beat the heat. Here are just a few:

--->Drink plenty of water to stay steps ahead of dehydration. Make sure there's a full pitcher of cool water in the refrigerator.
--->Stay cool by eating more salads, watermelon, and any other fresh fruits.
--->Be very careful outdoors even if you are working in the shade and take plenty of breaks to cool down.
---> Try to avoid using the kitchen oven for roasting or baking. If you have a slow cooker, use it instead to keep from heating up the house.
--->
A store bought rotisserie chicken is right on time. For the sweet tooth, a couple of Oreo or chocolate chip cookies from the bag are simply perfect.

Stay Cool my Friends!

Frugal Travel Tip

As you plan the family vacation or solo trip by car this summer, keep in mind how much money can be saved by packing your own munchies, water, and more instead of buying them on the road. Plan to invest in a cooler that will hold enough ice to keep items cool. Always check to make sure the ice hasn't melted in the cooler when you make stops. If needed, refill the cooler with ice and replenish the bottled waters from your supply so they can be cooling and ready to grab when needed. If you catch a sale on bottled water, buy extras to have ready to take along on the trip. The gas prices have gone back up, but the vacation travel season is still in full swing. Happy travels & savings!

Healthy Tidbit ->Step Out for Sun

If you're planning to spend the day inside the house working on various things, take a few minutes to step outside on the porch or deck and sit a few minutes in the sun. It's a good way to get a dose of vitamin D which our bodies need. I'm not advocating staying out in the sun for a long period of time given the skin cancer risks and let's not forget the hot temps, but just long enough to soak up bits of sunshine. Drink a cool glass of ice water while you're out there and then head back inside. The fresh air will do you good and you just might see one of these beautiful butterflies on the flowers. Now that would be delightful!

Happy 4th of July

Just a short blog post to wish my readers a Happy 4th of July! I bet many of you have the grill fired up already and lots of good food cooking. In this heat, it's a good idea to get started early. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Enjoy the day with family, friends and neighbors. I know some areas are experiencing drought conditions and are discouraging fireworks or may have banned them altogether. If sparklers are OK, the kiddies would probably like to see them light up. Be Safe & Have Fun!

Here are some fun facts about this Race that's held on the 4th of July every year. I have to give it to the runners who train hard for the chance at winning. It's usually scorching hot and humid by race time so I know grabs for water will be important. Good Luck!

Blonde Ice (1948)

Blonde Ice (1948)
Five great picks on Classic Cinema Online. I chose this one, it's right up my alley of intrigue. Your out-of-town guests might like to watch a classic flick this holiday weekend. If you pick a spooky one, dim the lights!

TGIF, You Betcha!

Just maybe you took today off from work to make this an even longer holiday weekend. If not, I'm sure the office staff will thin out probably by lunch as some work only a half day. For those folks who work from home, freelance, or simply don't hold the traditional 9-5 job, you may have decided to finish projects early so that your Friday can be light. If you are expecting out-of-town guests this weekend, today is probably going to be busy around the house, yard, and shopping. There's always lots to do, but don't forget to delegate chores with other family members so you're not overwhelmed. I got an early start on projects & paying some bills, can't forget them on the 1st of the month. It's TGIF, You Betcha!
