Olympic Players and their Tweets

For the second time soon after the Olympics began, another player has been expelled from the Games. I just read the story on USAToday about Swiss soccer player Michel Morganella being banned after a racist tweet. Apparently upset after Switzerland's loss to South Korea, Morganella took to his Twitter account and wrote a tweet that was disparaging.

I just wanted to weigh in for just a minute as another player last week was expelled for a racist tweet against African immigrants. The story also ran in USAToday about Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou's tweet. It puzzles my mind that the athletes would tweet these type of comments against another race of people. In the heat of frustration from a loss, some athletes lose their cool. OK, blow off some steam but not in the way these two athletes have done.

To train hard and dedicate the time leading up to the Summer Olympics with coaches, teammates, family and friends ready to cheer the athletes on to victory is a mighty feat indeed. I hope other athletes will exercise better judgment and not send insensitive tweets about another person. Be a better sport about the Games!
