Leftovers Again

A new start to the work week and you hit the ground running. The family may frown at eating Sunday's meal again tonight. But with the price of groceries, leftovers should not go to waste. Think outside the box and see what you can add to step the meal up a notch. Get the kids involved as you raid the refrigerator for ideas. I bet everyone will enjoy the leftovers after all. Yummy!

Endless Bargains

Today would be a great day to stop by your favorite Consignment or Goodwill stores. I like these places and think the bargains are endless. The season's are beginning to slowly change and some of these stores are marking down their summer clothing to make room for the fall arrivals. You may find some good buys for yourself and the kids especially if you live in areas where the climate will still be warm for another month or so. A fresh pair of capri pants, shorts, t-shirts, etc. will give your wardrobe extra mileage. It's worth a stop while you are out and about. Your wallet will appreciate you for it!

3 Healthy Tips Just for You!

Here are 3 healthy tips that reap plenty of benefits:

1. As the weather starts to cool, step up your walking program with early morning or evening walks. The hot summer months may have slowed down getting out often due to the heat. Get back in stride!
2. For portion control at mealtime, use a salad-size plate. This helps keep you from filling the plate with too much food.
3. If you feel sluggish while working, step away from your desk or office for a few minutes. If you can, go outside for some fresh air and drink plenty of water for hydration. Skip the chips or sweets.

Every little bit of healthy eating and exercise is beneficial for all of us.

Saving on College Textbooks

This week begins the fall semester for colleges and universities across the country. I remember my college days and the joy of resuming my studies and meeting up with friends. I also recall thoughts of how much the textbooks for my courses would cost.

I wanted to give some saving tips on purchasing textbooks for college students because I know how expensive they can be especially if you have to purchase them new. I always hoped that the professor did not change the textbook from the previous quarter/semester so I could possibly by the book used.

When students get the syllabus for their classes, they should check the campus bookstore's Used Book section to see if the textbook is available there. Better yet, some off-campus bookstores will carry college textbooks at a reduced price so it's worth a walk or drive to see.

During my college years, I did not mind buying used textbooks especially for courses that were electives as we called them back in my day. If the used book was in pretty good condition and the pages weren't filled with too much yellow highlighter, it's a good buy. Another way to find good deals on textbooks is to post on campus bulletin boards the textbooks you need for the courses. A lot of students want to make some extra bucks and may be willing to sell you their textbook at a good price. Just make sure the book is the correct edition for the course.

I hope anyone reading this post with kids in college will appreciate these tips and pass them along to their son or daughter. A college degree will open many doors and take you far in your aspirations. Keep on Learning!

Nutritional Snack for the Kids

It's back to school for some kids and when they get home, they are usually hungry for a snack before starting on any homework or play. I enjoyed this snack over the weekend and thought I would share it with my blog readers especially those with kids. It's really very simple.

Here you go: Spread peanut butter and a slice of banana on top of a saltine cracker. Prepare several for munching and it's a better snack than chips or candy. This snack is filled with protein and potassium which are good nutrients kids need in their day. If dinner is a few hours away, this is the perfect snack that will tie them over. I'm sure the kids will love it!

Weekend Salad Idea

Here's a easy and quick salad for the weekend that's cool for the hot days of summer.

Place romaine or green leaf lettuce in a bowl and top with these favorites ->tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and sliced fruit like peaches or mango. The fruit will give the salad a sweet kick. Also, pick up a rotisserie chicken from the deli and chop some on top. To finish, pour on your favorite salad dressing along with slices of buttered french bread on the side.

This salad can be enjoyed the entire weekend and doesn't require using the oven and heating up the house. Talk about yummy, cool!

3 Tidbits for You

1. Before walking through the house in the shoes you've worn all day and tracking in dirt, switch into some slippers or flip-flops to help keep your carpet and floors clean. Place these shoes at the door you enter daily for quick change.

2. Wash your hands after returning home before putting away the shopping and touching objects inside the home.

3. When cleaning the toilet bowl, don't forget to wipe off the flusher handle where germs can remain. Also, clean around the soap dispenser too.

Frugal Tip of the Day

My trip to the grocery store yesterday inspired this blog post because I was shocked at the higher prices on all my favorites. It was like the store had my buying habits pegged and decided enough bargain shopping for her. I'm kidding of course, but grocery prices are rising and will continue.

So my Frugal Tip of the Day is to always make a shopping list when heading to the grocery store and stick to the list. This will help keep you from overspending. It's easy to wander down aisles and browse. Before you know it, your cart is full of items you had no intention of buying at least not on this shopping trip.

It's the Weekend Baby!

I enjoy the weekend and especially one that's free of housework. To make that happen, I always do bits of household chores during the week so I can have fun with family and friends. Here are some ideas you might consider:

-->Meet gal pals for shopping, coffee chat
-->Visit and patronize local businesses in the community
-->Scout out garage sales for deals and interesting buys
-->Catch movie at matinee prices
-->Date night with your sweetie. Don't forget the dinner coupons

Whatever your weekend plans entails, make it fun!

Exercise & Vitamin D

I am always looking for ways to sneak in exercise throughout the day. While out running errands today, I parked my car a distance away from the store for extra walking. I also got a good dose of Vitamin D from the sun. The health experts report that the sun is a good way to get it.

So, park your car a safe distance from your shopping or business appointments to get a good dose of exercise and Vitamin D.

Simple Way to Organize Paperwork

I want to share the most simplest way to organize your paperwork that requires only three things: manila folders, accordion file, and Sharpie pen. That's right! Use the folders to place any important documents or paperwork inside and write on the folder flap what the contents contain. You don't need to go all out with printing fancy labels. Instead write clearly on the folder flap and you're done. Place the manila folders inside the accordion file for easy access when needed.

I wrote about this several monthso in the context of another blog, but wanted to make it a blog all it's own because I think it's such an easy way to organize your paperwork. We tend to put off working on organization thinking it will take a lot of time and supplies. To me, this is as simple as you can get. When you get any new information that you want to keep, follow these steps and you will be good to go!

I recently received my updated car insurance policy and after looking it over, it took me less than a minute to file it away in the manila folder which was already made for this document. Keeping You Organized!
