Late last week, Oprah Winfrey tweeted the cover photo for her September "O" magazine which always features herself on the cover. I like all the mag covers and the articles that will be featured for the month. The September issue was intriguing as it showed Oprah wearing her natural hair which looks fabulous.
As many readers may have been reading that a lot of African-American women have stopped getting their hair chemically-relaxed which straightens the roots to reveal a sleek and straight look to the hair. I ditched the chemicals going on 2 years now and it was the best decision. Oprah Winfrey has a personal stylist who takes very good care of her hair.
During gymnast Gabby Douglas' magnificent Olympic gold wins last week, some Twitter comments were coming in mentioning her hair which was pulled back in a bun. The sweat from all the twists and turns may have given her hair an unruly look. There was a backlash as many people thought the comments were inappropriate.
My scalp feels 100% better from not having the chemical treatments applied to my scalp to straighten the roots. Even on days when my hair looks a lot like Oprah's on the cover, I can tame it with a flat iron which reminds me so much of the old school "straightening comb" my grandma used on my hair at the kitchen stove. I'm living & loving my natural hair!

I subscribe to O Magazine. And for some reason I never noticed Oprah was on all the covers until this one.
ReplyDeleteBoth of my daughters have gone "natural", and my 12-year-old does a remarkable job caring for her hair. She never cared for relaxers in the first place. They both love their natural looks. But me? I've tried it several times, even before it became popular, and it never worked for me. I'm not patient enough. ;-)
Hi Linda, Oprah has only had two mag covers with other people joining her on them ~First Lady Michelle Obama and talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres.
DeleteSo glad to hear about your daughters going natural. I know it's hard for some women, but as long as you aren't having problems with the chemicals, keep on.
Thanks for commenting:-)
I use the hot comb and oil just as I did back in the day. Much easier, right?
ReplyDeleteNow that's what I'm talking about and you are right, it's much easier.
DeleteGood for you for going natural. I bet it feels so much better!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Sherry for visiting my blog and commenting. Plus, I am thrilled to have you as a new follower.
DeleteI am enjoying the natural look so much and it does feel much better. I visited your "Mama Diaries" blog which is great and followed it too.
See you here again soon!
Hi, Cynthia,
ReplyDeleteI hopped over her from Peaches' blog. Like you, I stopped processing my hair and it was the best thing I ever did.
My mother also used to use a pressing comb in my hair before I started getting it straightened. It took me a while to find a way I'd feel comfortable and I doubt I'll ever straighten my hair again.
Hi J.L.,
DeleteI am happy you hopped over to my blog. Peaches has a wonderful blog.
It has been great to discover other women who are no longer processing their hair. I am enjoying the journey.
Thanks for following my blog and I am following yours too.
